Born in 1957 in Montreal, Paul Colpron, after short studies in theatre, got his start as an illustrator for magazines and participated in the creation of posters. He also collaborated with Gilles Maheu, one of the best stage director in Canada and abroad, in the conception of masks for the first shows of the theatre troupe Carbone 14. In the early 90s, he started doing wood sculptures which will become his favourite means of expression. Since, his method has hardly changed: doing very little sketching and rarely making smaller-scale models. Colpron transposes his subjects on to the wood, most of the time without needing any real-life model.
