Martin Wittfooth
Martin Wittfooth was born in Toronto in 1981 and spent most of his childhood in Finland, moving back to Canada in 1993. He earned his MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York. His oil paintings envision landscapes in the quiet and haunting aftermath of unchecked progress, pursuits of power and wealth, ignorance, and war: the forecasted dystopia of our time. Laced with symbolism and allusions to contemporary subjects, issues, and fears, Wittfooth’s work attempts to engage both the eye and the viewer’s mind through an invitation to enjoy the aesthetic, but to think of what may lie beneath it (and perhaps, ahead of us). The world depicted in Wittfooth’s work implores the viewer to question the status quo, to challenge what is taken for granted, and to proceed with caution on our present course.
Wittfooth’s artworks had appeared in various international publications and media, including a large range of snowboards, album covers and magazines and are owned by many international collectors. His paintings have garnered the recognition of art awards from such prestigious annuals as Spectrum, American Illustration, 3x3, and the prestigious Applied Arts. His work has been exhibited in galleries worldwide.
